Sailing routes Amsterdam

Amsterdam is best explored from the water. With an electric sloop from Boaty, you’ll cruise leisurely along the canals, the Amstel River, and through charming neighborhoods steeped in history. Whether you’re cruising with friends, family, or colleagues, our Amsterdam boat routes will lead you past the most beautiful spots and give you the freedom to explore the city at your own pace.

Sailing route 1: Amsterdam canals and Amstel

A classic among Amsterdam’s canal tours. This route takes you along the world-famous canals: Herengracht, Keizersgracht, and Prinsengracht. Along the way, you’ll pass iconic bridges and stately canal houses. Ideal if you’re new to Amsterdam by boat and want to see the highlights.

Sailing route 1

Sailing route 2: Eastern center & Amstel

A surprising slice of Amsterdam. You’ll sail past the leafy Plantage district, Artis Royal Zoo, and the old warehouses near the Eastern Islands. This route is ideal for those who enjoy a mix of city life, nature, and history. Along the way, you can easily stop for a short break or lunch.

Sailing route 3: ‘The Best of the Rest’

The Best of the Rest Amsterdam route is the ideal choice for those who want to discover Amsterdam’s lesser-known, yet equally beautiful, sides. This tour takes you through tranquil canals and hidden neighborhoods where the hustle and bustle of the city center seems far away. You’ll see charming houseboats, charming bridges, and local hotspots you won’t find in every guidebook. This route is perfect if you’re already familiar with the city and want to experience something new.

Sailing route 3

Sailing route 4: out of the city on the Amstel

Prefer a bit more peace and quiet? Then choose the Amstel Route. This route takes you along the wide Amstel River towards the south of the city. Along the way, you’ll pass charming terraces, houseboats, and the Amstel Hotel. Perfect if you want to enjoy nature just outside the city center but still want to stay close to the city.

Where are you allowed to sail in Amsterdam?

Boaty’s electric sloops are allowed to sail almost anywhere in Amsterdam’s city center. Only major waterways, such as the IJ River and certain sections of the North Sea Canal, are prohibited. Our handy cruising map shows you exactly which Amsterdam waterways you can take and which ones are best avoided. This way, you can always cruise safely and relaxed through the city. During exceptional circumstances, such as the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve also developed a special private weekend boat tour route for those who want to enjoy a relaxing cruise with their own group.

Sailing map with routes

Before you depart, we’ll provide you with a clear Amsterdam cruising map. It features the four most popular sailing routes and highlights the main attractions along the way. The map is clear and easy to follow, even if you’re new to the route. You’ll also receive a short, personalized briefing, so you’ll know exactly where to moor and the route.

Personal explanation

Before you set off, we’ll give you a personalized briefing on how to steer the boat and use the nautical chart. We’ll tell you which route best suits your available time and what to see along the way. If you have any questions while sailing, feel free to call us; we’re happy to help. This way, you’ll make the most of your Amsterdam sailing routes.

Three or four hours of sailing

On average, a boat tour through Amsterdam takes between three and four hours, depending on the route you choose. The Canal Belt Route, for example, can easily be completed in three hours, while the Amstel Route or the Plantage and East Route are a bit longer.
